SUMMARY:Proportioned Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Proportioned Orchestra began as an ensemble in June 2016. Initially\, the group was comprised of drums\, vocals\, and double bass. Dr. Professor Leonard King — drummer\, vocalist\, arranger\, and founder of the ensemble — gradually expanded the lineup to include four double bassists\, guitar\, drums\, and vocals. \nThis distinctive instrumentation allows the group to perform a wide range of material\, including Dr. King’s original compositions as well as works by Astor Piazzolla\, Jimi Hendrix\, Charlie Parker\, Gunther Schuller\, George Duke\, Buddy Ace\, Jaco Pastorius\, Thelonious Monk\, and others. The group has performed at venues throughout Detroit and has recordings available worldwide. \nLearn More

SUMMARY:Hip-Hop Expansion
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the final week of Contemporary Anishinaabe Art: A Continuation with a Hip-Hop showcase featuring projections of animated works by Konstance Patton Ke-nee-go-keshek and Jonathan Thunder\, along with performances by rappers KHALFANI and Thomas X. Highlighting shared experiences of Native and Black Americans\, each featured artist presents Hip-Hop as a powerful\, culturally enriching\, and uplifting creative force for Native and Black communities in Detroit and beyond. \nComplementing the DIA’s special exhibition\, this performance explores how Hip-Hop—both a product and expression of the Black experience—also speaks to the social and political realities of Native artists. \nWhile at the museum\, be sure to visit Contemporary Anishinaabe Art: A Continuation\, on view through April 5. \nCapacity is limited. Seating begins 30 minutes prior to the performance. \nLearn more
